“Then I won’t hurt you anymore.” she planted a kiss on his cheek “I don’t like seeing you hurt…especially when I’m the cause.” They made their way back to James’s from, quietly with their arms linked. She kept glancing at his face every so often, trying to decipher his emotions, but all she saw was hurt and worry. She swallowed before saying “Maybe you would have been better going off with Amber, she would have been the safer option and she wouldn’t do this to you…”
“Amber was depressed too, Lucy.” James said. “She would get upset so easily… Probably a lot more easier than you. I’d have to deal with the exact same thing. But, Lucy, at least you came out the stronger one. You were stronger. That’s something that a girl should always have. Strength. And I know you still have it.”

“I’m going to try really hard no to give up.” Lucy moved her arms to round his neck and pressed her cheek against his “do you think you could forgive me…again?”
“I’ll always be able to forgive you.” He said, closing his eyes. “I’m here to help you, I promised I would and that’s what I’ll do.”
She nodded and pulled away, giving him a quick kiss of the lips “I’ll have to call my mam to um, get admitted somewhere…” her voice went quiet “so I’ll be out of school for a while. Do you think you’ll be able to come visit me at all?”
“As often as you want me to.” He promised. “Every weekend, every other day, every day even, I’ll be there.”
“But only out of school hours, I’m not letting you fall behind in your classes, just because I’m lonely.” Lucy brushed back her hair and looked at the water “I’ll be ok once I’m in a hospital, I’ll be safe and it can’t get any worse.”
“I surely hope not.” He said, rubbing her back. “I want my Lucy to get better soon. I hate when you’re like this, sweetheart.”
“you’re not the only one, but I just feel so helpless.” Lucy held both of his hands in hers “god, this will be an amusing tale to tell Hannahs kids. Bout how aunt Lucy went through her ‘nutter’ phase.”
“People go through that phase…” James said quietly. “But it’s only the best that make it out.”
“I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try as much as I can.” she looked at their hands “will you stay with me tonight because, I’ll be gone tomorrow, if mam has her way…”
James nodded. “I will, don’t worry. You don’t even have to ask.”
She gave him a small smile “Do you think we could go back to your dorm though? I’m um, well, it’s getting pretty chilly out here,”
“Yeah,” James said, helping her up. “I’ll make sure you’re extra cozy, okay? Do you want me to go get you something to eat while we’re going on our way?”
“No, I’m good, we can just go straight up.” she hooked her arm through his and put her head on his shoulder “I love you, James, you don’t deserve any of this and I’m sorry for putting you through it all.”
“Neither of us do.” He said. “But don’t worry about it. Just worry about getting better, okay? The only thing hurting me is you not getting better.”
